DO’S & DON’TS AFTER A DENTAL PROCEDURE

Whether you’ve had a simple cleaning or a more intensive treatment like a filling or extraction, how you care for your mouth afterward plays a big role in your recovery and long-term oral health. Here’s a helpful list of do’s and don’ts to follow post-treatment to ensure a smooth healing process and protect your smile.

The Do’s After the DENTAL PROCEDURE

    • Follow your dentist’s instructions carefully
Always follow the post-procedure advice given — including medication timings, rinsing, or avoiding certain foods.

    • Keep your mouth clean
Gently rinse with warm salt water (if advised) to reduce swelling and keep the area clean — especially after extractions or deep cleaning.

    • Stick to soft foods
Choose soft, non-spicy, and non-acidic foods like yogurt, soup, mashed potatoes, or smoothies for the first 24–48 hours.

    • Apply a cold compress (if needed)
Helps with swelling or discomfort after more invasive treatments like wisdom tooth removal.

    • Attend your follow-up appointments
Don’t skip check-ups, especially if your procedure requires healing observation or adjustments.

    DON’TS

    • Don’t smoke or use a straw
These can disturb blood clots (especially after an extraction), leading to dry socket or delayed healing.

    • Avoid hard, crunchy, or sticky foods
These can damage the treated area, irritate the gums, or dislodge fillings.

    • Don’t poke the treated area with your tongue or fingers
This can introduce bacteria and slow down recovery.

    • Don’t skip brushing — but be gentle
Continue your routine, but avoid brushing directly over sensitive or treated spots for a day or two.

    • Don’t ignore unusual symptoms
Swelling, severe pain, bleeding, or a bad taste in the mouth could mean an issue. Contact your dentist immediately.
